We chose to incorporate the theme of the old proverb into the wall designs. The proverb being that "to develop and grow, children need two things - roots and wings". We felt that this best summed up belonging and positive nurturing - a theme encouraged in the artwork brief. The core elements we worked with were the nest, the home, the tree, and the flock of birds, all symbolically reinforcing the central idea associated with family and a sense of belonging.

Title: LIFE LINE (artwork for Kalgoorlie Town Site)

Materials: Steel water pipes with 178 brass taps with mosaic 'puddle' base with gold leaf and brass detailing
Client: Ministry of Justice with CAMS
Architect: Spowers Architects and Plan E - Landscape Architects
Art Consultant: Urban Thresholds
Size:
Location: Detainees Mall Area, Banksia Hill Detention Centre, Perth
Date: Opened September 1997
Brief Concept
Description:
Theme - sense of place. Following our meetings with the kids we decided that creating an informal map of the state would help with the feeling of isolation and disorientation felt by many of young offenders. Artworks symbolising Western Australian towns and geographical features mark the paved mall area. Kalgoorlie (and the dry interior) is represented by water pipes set with 178 "gold" brass taps - only one tap provides water and is a drinking fountain.
